Wing Foiling in Guadeloupe: The Complete Guide | Kawana
Wing Foiling in Guadeloupe: The Complete Guide | Kawana
Wing foiling in Guadeloupe means 81 °F (27 °C) water, steady trade winds and a lagoon sheltered by a coral reef. 🌴
Best spot to learn: the lagoon of Saint-François, at Plage de la Coulée.
Best time: December to May.
Here's everything else.

🌬️ Why Guadeloupe is a wing foil playground
The wind. Trade winds blow from the east and northeast, day after day. No nasty gusts rolling off the land.
The water. 79 to 85 °F (26 to 29.5 °C) all year. A shorty or a rash guard is all you need.
The lagoon. At Saint-François, the reef breaks the swell. Behind it: 112 hectares (275 acres) of shallow, flat, turquoise water. Perfect for your first flights.
You spend your time riding, not fighting the elements.

📅 When to wing foil in Guadeloupe?
Peak season runs from December to May. It's the dry season, known locally as carême: the trade winds are steady, often between 15 and 25 knots. Perfect for learning and for progressing.
June to August is a seriously underrated window: the wind is still very much there, and the island is way less crowded. Truth is, that's when the locals get their fill of sessions 😉
September to mid-November is the rainy season, or hivernage. The wind is more irregular, sometimes lighter. There are still great days, but you need to keep a closer eye on the forecast.

📍 Where to ride
The lagoon of Saint-François ticks every box for learning. That's where we teach, from Plage de la Coulée.
Once you're independent, the island opens up: other lagoons on the south coast, wave spots for experienced riders, and downwinders along the coast.

🏄 The gear
You don't need to buy anything to start. We provide it all: wing, board, foil, leash, impact vest and helmet.
A wing foil setup has four parts:
The wing: the inflatable sail you hold in your hands.
The board: big for beginners, smaller as you progress.
The foil: the mast and wings under the board. That's what makes you fly.
Safety gear: leash, impact vest, helmet.
We ride Duotone, Ozone, Fone and Foil Attitude as an official partner. You get to try recent gear before you buy.

🎓 How learning works
Lessons are taught in English or French. 🇬🇧 No kitesurfing or surfing background needed. If you can swim, you can learn. 💪
A lesson lasts about 2 hours. The usual progression:
Handle the wing on the beach, then in the water.
Ride on your knees, then standing, on a big board.
First take-offs: you feel the foil lift the board. That's when you get hooked.
Stable flight: you hold your height and speed.
Independence: you ride upwind and come back to where you started.
Two things make the difference at Kawana:
Radio coaching 🎙️: your instructor talks to you live while you ride.
The e-foil as a learning tool ⚡: on no-wind days, you keep working on your flight, and everything you learn carries over to wing foiling.
How many lessons until you fly? It depends on you, your fitness and the wind. 👉 We talk about it honestly in How Long Does It Take to Learn Wing Foiling? (coming soon).

The e-foil ⚡: our learning tool for foiling. The electric motor replaces the pull of the wing. You work on your take-off, stance and stable flight, and everything you learn carries over to wing foiling, kite foiling or windfoiling.
Paddle boarding lets you explore the lagoon when it turns into a mirror. 🪞
